[Mp4-tech] H.264 Reference Implementation

Hi all,
I've been looking at the H.264 Reference Implementation (version 82) and
I was hoping that someone here could help me out.
The code seems to be quite disorganised and, since it is also
uncommented/documented, I'm having difficulty understanding how it
works. I'm aware of the documentation on the H.264 Reference
Implementation website, but it consists pretty much of just computer
generated graphs; not really any "meaty" documentation.
Does anybody know if there are any open-source or alternate
implementations of the H.264 encoder available, or failing that, any
source where I can get more information on the workings of the code?
